Functions of the Editor, Co-editor, and Editorial Board: Editorial Management

1. Editorial Management

  • Define and maintain the journal’s editorial policy (scope, manuscript types, frequency, access model).

  • Coordinate the manuscript flow: submission, initial evaluation (desk review), assignment of reviewers, and monitoring of the peer review process.

  • Make the final decision on acceptance, rejection, or request for revisions, based on quality and fit with the scope.

  • Manage the editorial team: select, motivate, and evaluate associate editors, editorial board members, and reviewers.

  • Supervise editorial production: copyediting, layout, metadata, DOI assignment, and final publication.

  • Prepare the annual budget and present the journal’s strategic plan.

2. Ethics Processes

  • Adhere to COPE (Committee on Publication Ethics) standards and other international guidelines.

  • Ensure confidentiality of the review process and of authors’ and reviewers’ data.

  • Investigate and resolve allegations of plagiarism, data fabrication, improper authorship, conflict of interest, or misconduct.

  • Manage conflicts of interest and ensure transparency in retractions or corrections when necessary.

  • Ensure publication integrity: decide which articles are published without commercial or political interference.

3. Indexing

  • Know and apply the evaluation criteria of indexes and directories (Scopus, Web of Science, SciELO, RedALyC, Latindex, etc.).

  • Prepare and submit the required documentation to apply the journal to new databases.

  • Keep metadata up to date (title, abstract, keywords, references) to facilitate indexing.

  • Supervise DOI management and proper synchronization with Crossref and other platforms.

  • Monitor impact indicators (impact factor, SJR, CiteScore, altmetrics) and propose improvement strategies.

4. Publication

  • Ensure the scientific and formal quality of each issue (originality, methodological rigor, clarity).

  • Plan the structure of each issue: sections, editorials, special articles, thematic issues.

  • Coordinate the publication schedule to ensure periodicity and avoid delays.

  • Write the editorial for each issue and, where applicable, presentation notes.

  • Verify compliance with the formatting and style guidelines established for authors.

5. Dissemination

  • Design and execute a dissemination plan to give visibility to published articles.

  • Distribute the journal through online platforms, databases, and institutional repositories.

  • Produce multimedia material (videos, podcasts, infographics, visual abstracts) to accompany articles.

  • Send alerts and newsletters to readers, authors, and subscribers.

  • Promote authors’ participation in disseminating their own articles on academic networks.

6. Advertising

  • Direct commercial agreements to UNAULA, respecting conflict-of-interest policies.

  • Identify commercial opportunities for UNAULA (supplements, reprints, special issues) and present them to the editor or the publisher.

  • Ensure a clear separation between editorial content and advertising content.

7. Social Media Management

  • Create and manage the journal’s accounts on platforms such as Twitter/X, LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, and academic networks (ResearchGate, Academia.edu).

  • Generate and publish content (article summaries, infographics, tweets, posts) to promote the journal and its publications.

  • Coordinate promotional campaigns and social media events (author chats, journal clubs, webinars).

  • Monitor metrics (engagement, reach, clicks) and adjust strategy according to results.

  • Collaborate with the publisher’s marketing team and other social media editors to align messages.
